Monica Raspi in Chianti Classico, from veterinarian to winemaker
The owner of the estate (and of the vineyards) at Fattoria Pomona is Monica: she has never been a winemaker, she is a veterinarian by profession and when in 2007 the family business risked being sold... she decided to close her clinic and take over! She picked up the Enology manual, insisted on converting the entire production to organic and learned to ride the tractor. He has always declared himself independent and is proud to join FIVI - Federazione Italiana Vignaioli Indipendenti.
At Fattoria Pomona, an unmissable appointment is the 'caffè agricolo': something like an half morning break, around 11 am, that borderline time that is no longer breakfast and not yet lunch, together with Mamma Inge under the patio in summer and in the house in winter, sharing a glass of Sangiovese and a few slices of cheese. The 'caffè agricolo' simply translates the concept of bulk wine - easy and extremely good to drink everyday - .
Fattoria Pomona is located in Castellina in Chianti and here the most typical grapes are first of all Sangiovese and also a little bit of Cabernet Sauvignon. Boxed wine by Pomona is made with those varieties, an everyday tasty red vinified with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks and able to be paired with all cold cuts and fiorentina from Tuscany. According to Monica, what a winemaker should do is transfer to the drinker not only the value of the grape, but its flavour and its joyfulness. Ready to tap?
