CA' DEL PRETE
📍 Piedmont | Monferrato
🍇 Freisa, Barbera, Malvasia di Schierano
🧑🌾 Organic agricolture
Luca, a young winemaker from Pino d'Asti with a passion for Freisa.
Ca’ del Prete is doing a great job in the valorisation of an unknown variety called Freisa. Freisa? Do you know this slightly loser red grape from Piedmont or not? Less-known yes, but without real reasons, because it would have all the skills to be a trendy wine. We list here at least three reasons: 1. it is super autochthonous, from Monferrato, from the hills around Turin and from Saluzzo, so for fans of the 'km 0' grapes, it's top! 2. it is rustic, in the sense of true, authentic and peasant. 3. is brave, or as Luca likes to define him is like "a rebellious 16 yo guy, full of creativity, willing to discover the world and have new experiences".
Ca' del Prete has always been Luca's home, but in 2014 he effectively became the owner, inheriting what his uncle Giorgio set up. The agricultural farming has always been organic, but with Luca we go a little further: wild herbs, legumes and a lot of biodiversity in the vineyard, only indigenous yeasts, limited use of technology and minimal use of sulphites in the cellar. In the approximately 4 hectares of property, in addition to Freisa, also little percentage of Barbera and Malvasia from Schierano are cultivated and even these grapes, in a smaller percentage, contribute to the production of Ca' del Prete boxed wine.
Luca from Ca’ del Prete actually has another passion: the screw cap! He was very skilled on this topic, so much so that he opened a site entirely dedicated to the topic, to spread the word a little (beyond than to be hated a little by the more traditionalists who love cork!). We share this brave spirit with him and we hope that the strong wine history behind us does not preclude the success of new ideas and visions, such as the screw cap or the bag in box.
